WELCOME TO
THE LIBRARY THESAURUS of

The thesaurus was constructed in order to aid NFER researchers in searching the NFER library catalogue. It was designed primarily to cover the English education system, but now also provides terms for the various fields of children’s services. Terms are also included which refer to the rest of the United Kingdom and to Europe, particularly in the areas of legislation and policy.
The core fields of education, training and children’s services include:
- Children’s Services
- Curriculum and Assessment
- Educational Philosophy, Theory and Research
- Facilities and Resources
- Legislation and Policy
- Management and Administration:
- Educational Provision
- Educational Administration
- Modes of Teaching and Learning
- Quality and Performance
- Special Educational Needs
The peripheral areas of the thesaurus education reflect where education touches other areas of society, such as the arts, careers, crime, politics etc
The thesaurus is displayed as an alphabetical list. Each term is listed with all its relationships, plus a scope note where necessary. Terms can have any number of Narrower or Related terms, but none has been assigned with more than one Broad term. Separate list of countries, document descriptors , age and educational level descriptors are provided.
At time of writing, 9 September 2010, a total of 5601 terms are in use, of which 5211 are preferred terms, and 390 are nonpreferred terms.
Preferred terms are terms used in indexing documents. Nonpreferred terms are included in the thesaurus to lead users to preferred terms.
This thesaurus is maintained by Ken Gibb, k.gibb@nfer.ac.uk, and is updated every three months.
